(More customer reviews)Idon't usually like mixing cardio and weights in alternating intervals in a workout. I either strength train or do cardio. Another thing I usually dislike is combination strength moves, especially the done-to-death bicep curl while you lunge, or overhead press while you squat. (I do enjoy non-awkward "functional fitness" feeling moves where everything works synergistically like in the TLTs or even with Tony Horton.)
Every once in a while though a really good exception to my "no mixing rule comes" along. Like Patrick's Hard Work Conditioning (I will lunge while doing bicep curls for Patrick) or Cathe's Drill Max (strictly reserved for days when I am feeling invincible).
And now, Kelly's Bootcamp!
The common thing between these workouts in my opinion is that they are so high on the fun factor, besides being well-planned. Kelly's strength moves in Bootcamp are creative. I especially like the kettlebell swing inspired move and the functional-fitness like side-lunge to overhead reach. The cardio is completely uncomplicated and yet manages to feel fresh. You do every cardio or strength drill for two whole minutes. The drills are all so much fun that time flies. I like the music on Kelly's other workouts better, but this DVD has its share of great songs. I have twingy knees lately. I give special bonus points to any workout with pacing/moves that don't make my knees protest. Bootcamp gets the special bonus points. It has plyo, curtsey lunges, squats - and yet the pacing and spacing makes it completely handle-able for my knees.
I like yoga for flexibility. I usually skip stretching on any DVD and pop in yoga. The few exceptions are the stretch on Amy's Rumble, Tracey's Strike Zone and the luxurious bonus on this one.
If I could give away a prize for modifier in a video workout, it would be to Lauren from Kelly's DVDs. Her moves never seem like unimaginative afterthoughts and she puts so much energy and enthusiasm into them. Lauren is great on Bootcamp too.
As in all workouts in Kelly's 30 minute series, you gets tons of value for your money (2 complete 30 minute workouts, complete with warm up and cool down plus the bonus stretch) besides well-designed premixes. Particularly great are the All Strength premix and All Cardio Premix for days when you dont want to mix the two styles.
